Slide1.JPG

In 2011, Al-Khafji Joint Operations “KJO were planning the  upgrading of facilities at their Al-Khafji plant in the  Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Aramco Gulf Operations Company Limited (“AGOC”) and Kuwaiti Gulf Oil Company   (“KGOC”), jointly operating at and from Al-Khafji, Saudi Arabia for oil and gas exploration, development and production, in the offshore area of the divided ex-Neutral Zone between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

PURPOSE

The purpose of the new facilities was to support maintaining of maximum sustainable capacity of 300 thousand barrel per calendar day of Khafji crude and 50 thousand barrel per calendar day of Hout (KRL) crude. Due to additional loads under ongoing and planned offshore projects, offshore available power had become insufficient and the existing single cable and the existing single transformer at onshore was not able to support the loads within allowable voltage drop limits.

THE SITE

Al-Khafji joint operation (KJO) is located in the eastern part of Saudi Arabia. It is situated in the shoreline of Arabian Sea approximately 120 km South East of Kuwait City.

Sea Conditions:

Max. water depth @3.5 Km                        : 12.50 m (attributed to LAT)

Tidal levels:

  •       High Astronomical Tide (HAT)              : +2.469m

  •       Mean High Water Spring (MHWS)       : +1.823m

  •       Mean Sea Level (MSL)                        :  +1.386 m

  •       Mean Low Water Spring (MLWS)        :  +0.949 m

  •       Low Astronomical  Tide (LAT)              :  +0.000 m

Tidal current  :  0.5 m /sec

SCOPE OF WORK

Scope Of Work shall comprise four (4) main activities:

  • Trenching from splicing box onshore to KP 3.5 into the sea.

  • Shore pull of 3500 meters of Second Submarine Power Cable ‘SSPC’ & Laying it in trench from an Offshore Cable Lay Vessel Bold Maverick (supply point) to the Splicing Chamber at the shore using pulling Winch placed onshore. Care to be taken as of not to overstress the Cable during the pulling operation.

  • Installation of 2 nos. Precast Concrete Mattresses.

  • For SSPC submarine cable protection at crossing location, there is one intersection with another cable at crossing ID CR01 within the Working Zone .

  • Backfill Of Open Trench.

WORK SEQUENCE

  1. Demarcation of the Operation Area.

  2. Trenching Operation.

  3. Trench Maintenance.

  4. Installation of pulling winch/Tensioner.

  5. Cable Floatation & Pull.
